An August 20, 2007 USA Today cover story stated the number of small car owners is growing even though..."more drivers die in small cars." That is according to the government, insurance industry and National Academy of Science.
Also according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there are 108 small car driver deaths per million vehicles, 70 for midsize, 67 for large, and 55 for SUVs. Small cars are categorized as compact and subcompact cars.
At the time, the average cost of gasoline was about $2.75. The average cost of gas now is $3.85.
